 Spread of Western Education in Modern India: India had an indigenous system of education in the 18th century which lacked the study of modern science. In the beginning , the East India company remained indifferent to the problem of education. Some liberal rulers were exception to the rule. Warren  Hastings founded 'The Calcutta Madarsha' in 1781 for the promotion  of Persian literature, Jonathan Duncan  founded 'Benaras Sanskrit College' in 1782, Sir William Jones founded 'Asiatic Society' in 1784, etc.


Growth and spread of western education: Raja Rammohan Roy and many other nationalist thinkers realised that the regeneration of India was not possible without embracing western education. Raja Rammohan Roy wrote a letter to Lord Amherst for the promotion of western  learning and science.


Charter Act of 1813: The year 1813 is  a landmark in the historyof western education because the British Government passed Charter Act in that year. By this act the government asked the East India Company to spend RS. 1 lac for the promotion of Western Education in India. So to spread the useful knowledge, the Christian missionaries were allowed to enter India without any restriction.
Role of Christian missionaries : The Christian missionaries believed that the spread of English education would promote the interest in Christianity among Indians. William Corey of Baptist Mission founded an English school at Serampore which grew into Serampore College. The Scottish missionary Alexander Duff founded general Assemblies Institution at Calcutta  in 1830 which came to be known as the Scottish Church College.  The St. Xavier's College was founded in 1835 at Calcutta.


The Role of Humanists:
The Humanists like  Raja Rammohan Roy , Alexander Duff , etc. contributed to the growth of western education. Rammohan Roy helped Alexander Duff in founding his college. The Hindu college was established in the year 1817.
